If you are deaf or, as in my case, with reduced hearing you need subtitles even when the audio is in your OWN languages (English and French in my case).
I also have an LG but I gave up on Smart with the LG. My solution is a connected AFTV box (or stick) with Smart + VLC. That way you do get the full choice of available subtitles plus you can output greater volume on bluetooth than possible with the LG.
If you're using SIPTV on LG, then red button followed by green button to turn on subtitles. Usually that comes up as English, finding any others is a hit and miss affair! Samsung is much easier in this regard or a Fire TV stick with SIPTV and VLC media player.

Smart IPTV + VLC on my Fire TV box connected to my LG WebOs 3.3.1 TV works fine, but with Smart directly on my TV, the Red & Green btns do not enable a choice of languages / subtitles in multi-sub VOD using the LG controller.
Any solution?
