most fritz box can handle vpn server, but not vpn client. you would need a router with integrated vpn client. just search for asus router with incl. vpn client and you will find some good ones ;)

Just install the regular vlc player. Once installed: Go in to the settings and you'll find a "Playback option", click on that to change decoding settings from hardware to software if needed, use an external player or more ;)
