I have a Asus RT-AC68U and did try to use it for VPN, BUT, its not powerful enough to handle more clients OR high bandwidth use.
But you are correct, the Vilfo box is expensive.

I can only speak good about Mullvad VPN. They have very good servers in Sweden, i don't loose any bandwidth when using them. The support from them are great also - answers back in an hour or so. They also have an Android app that is possible to use on the Firstick.
